If you need a receipt, just let us know. Many company benefit plans now include yoga!
We recommend you get your own yoga mat, though we have a couple of loaners available, we just think it is nicer to be on your own mat. We do yoga in bare feet but please feel free to bring socks and a sweater or shawl to cover yourself when you are relaxing as the body can cool down quite a bit. Plus it is really cozy! We suggest drinking lots of water after class.
We do not have a specific class for pregnant women at this time. Prenatal students are welcome in the gentle beginner classes. Marilyn is an experienced and trained prenatal yoga teacher, well able to adapt the class to people with individual needs
There is parking on the street in front of the studio (free after 6 and on weekends) and in the municipal lot behind the studio, accessed from Perry Street (also free after 6 and on weekends).
There is a yoga class for every person but not every yoga class is suitable for every person. Our gentle yoga classes and Kundalini class are very appropriate for people with anxiety and stress issues and for those with limited mobility.
We can adapt poses to the individual with the help of various props. This is a great benefit of pre-registered classes, we get to know you!
Yoga is not about flexibility but about starting where we are and, in terms of flexibility, none of us are alike. We build flexibility by stretching and strengthening and stabilizing the body, and by relaxing! This is great no matter where you begin.
Our intermediate classes are based on the Ashtanga system of yoga, a vigorous series of postures, designed to get the blood and the breath flowing in the body. We will do lots of strength building work and become more flexible through increased muscle and joint strength and stability.
All yoga classes are stress relieving. That doesn't mean an 'easy' class is the best route, some of us relax more when our bodies are in motion and we have less time to think! Some of us prefer a more sedentary class. This is a personal preference, just noticing your breath alone is enough to calm the nervous system and that happens in every yoga class.
People relax in different ways and if you have found a class too difficult in the past or too easy, try another one. At the same time, make it your intention to get the most out of any class you go to and commit to suspending judgment.
Sometimes the things we need the most are the hardest thing to wrap our head around!
Teens and spouses are welcome and yoga is a really nice way to develop a communal interest. Find out what type of class they might be interested in and it doesn't hurt to start out on the gentle side.
Every yoga teacher and yoga studio offers its own distinctive flavour, but yoga is a magical sequence of postures that has been around for 4000 years. We are teachers of yoga but we didn't invent it, the experience that you found so pleasurable came from within you and you can find it again. Your new teacher may not teach in the same way, but open yourself to the new things you can learn.
We do not offer refunds or credits.
Speak to your teacher, there are usually ways to modify the practice and the poses. Don't be concerned if other people in the class are doing things differently, we all work to our own ability.
There are many reasons for weight gain and one of them most definitely is stress. Yoga can help calm the nervous system and bring the body and mind back into balance. This might make it easier to lose weight. That doesn’t mean a vigorous class is necessarily the best, you can sweat all you want but your body needs to be able to efficiently and promptly process the food you eat. Sometimes a more gentle class is more balancing, or a gentle class in combination with a more vigorous class.
It is not uncommon for some discomfort to occur as the body works through years of tension and conditioning. You may feel residual stiffness from the physical effort of classes but this should ease with time. Pain is a different story, never accept being in a position that causes your body pain, it is contrary to all we teach in yoga and definately does NOT lead to any gain. Tell your teacher and we may be able to suggest a different way to do the poses, a simple alignment change might help. Accept that you might just have to skip some poses.
Also consider combining your yoga with other body work like acupuncture, massage, cranial sacral therapy, osteopathy or chiropractic. We also offer private classes for $60 an hour that might help you learn new patterns.
Call or email Elissa, we can talk about it. Often it comes down to the best time for you, it is not possible to find the perfect class for every student and for every student's schedule, sometimes you have to make the class work for you.
